Synopsis[]

The Weissmans arrive in the Catskills for their annual summer trip and attempt to settle into familiar patterns. Whispers of Midge and Joel's separation cause Rose to poke around her daughter's love life. Susie must adjust her summer plans in an effort to keep her and Midge's career momentum going. [1]

Plot[]

The Weissmans and Midge depart for their annual two-month vacation at Steiner's Resort in the Catskill Mountains. Joel and the Maisels are also vacationing there. Susie, angry that Midge is interrupting her comedy career, follows her to the resort. She poses as a staff member while working to book Midge comedy gigs in the area. Joel inadvertently discovers Abe's secret early-morning exercise routine, embarrassing his father-in-law. Midge resists her parents manoeuvring her into meeting Benjamin Ettenberg, an eligible New York doctor staying at the resort.

Historical References[]

This episode is the first of three set at the fictional Steiner Mountain Resort in the Catskill Mountains of New York. The resorts of the Catskills were the favored summer retreats of Jewish families who could afford to leave hot, humid New York City in the summer during the days before air conditioning.

In the 1950s, many of the hotels along the Atlantic shore and other vacation spots were "restricted," accepting only white, gentile guests. This lead to the growth of resorts catering to Jewish families in the Catskills. Steiner's may have been inspired by Grossinger's Catskill Resort Hotel, one of the largest of the Catskills resorts, which Midge mentions in this episode.

These hotels and resorts frequently featured nightly entertainment and became fertile ground for budding Jewish entertainers, especially stand-up comedians, who performed in what became known as the "Borscht Belt," the hotels and clubs dotting the Catskills. Comics including Henny Youngman, Rodney Dangerfield, Joan Rivers, and Billy Crystal developed their comic skills as they entertained the Jewish clientele summering in the Catskills.
